The world is collapsing and being reborn at the same time.
Old systems are breaking. The political landscape feels unstable. Climate disruption accelerates. Economic structures strain. Much of what once felt solid no longer does.
It can be exhausting.
It can be frightening.
And for those who are paying attention, it can feel deeply personal.
The Long Labor is a seven-part series written for this in-between time.
It uses the metaphor of childbirth to help make sense of where we are — not at an ending, and not yet at a beginning, but in the long, demanding middle of something trying to be born.
Like any labor, this moment does not ask us to rush or fix.
It asks for presence.
For breath.
For the courage to stay with what is unfolding, even when every instinct says to look away.
Across the series, we move through the stages of labor together:
-
- rupture and no return
-
- rest between contractions
-
- releasing what cannot come with us
-
- holding space for emergence
-
- glimpsing a new world forming
-
- honoring what nourished us
-
- and meeting what has just been born
This series does not predict outcomes.
It does not promise ease.
What it offers is companionship — a way to stay conscious without becoming hardened, and a reminder that humans have always known how to move through profound transitions, even when we forget in the thick of it.
If you’re feeling overwhelmed by what’s happening.
If you’re wondering how to stay compassionate when everything feels unsteady.
If you need somewhere to rest your attention for a moment —
You’re welcome here.
Begin at the beginning, or let a title call to you.
Move slowly.
Return as needed.
You are not laboring alone.
